» Treatment Philosophy
At Neuropsychology and Psychology Associates, our emphasis is on providing psychological treatment for the wide range of psychological, psychiatric, neuropsychological and behavioral problems.
We believe that a careful diagnostic distinction, based on thorough evaluation and testing, needs to be made between neuropsychological/medical versus psychological causes of behavioral/emotional problems,
and that medication can at times be detrimental to the therapeutic improvement of problems with psychological causes.
Very careful listening and educated and skillful probing are often necessary to reveal the psychological causes of emotional/behavioral problems. We have seen cases in which medical problems were inappropriately treated as psychiatric/psychological problems, and cases in which problems of psychological origin were over-medicated and highly undertreated psychotherapeutically. We believe that for behavioral/emotional problems of psychological origin, the medical model of treatment as symptom reduction is overly simplistic and can lead to reduced long-term functioning and quality of life.
We believe that the patient is the vehicle of his or her own change.
